MCP (Model Context Protocol)
MCP is an open standard for connecting AI assistants, such as Claude and ChatGPT, to outside tools and data. It gives the assistant one common way to read from and act on the software your business already uses.
Think of a USB socket. Before it, every device needed its own cable. MCP does the same job for AI: build the connection once, and any assistant that speaks MCP can use it.
Why MCP matters
An AI assistant on its own knows nothing about your customers. To ask it about a deal, you would paste in notes by hand. That is slow, and the answer is only as good as what you pasted.
With MCP, the assistant asks your software directly. It reads the real account, the real quotes and the real emails. You get answers based on your data, not a guess.
How MCP works
There are two sides:
- The server sits in front of a tool, such as a CRM. It lists what the assistant may do: search accounts, read a deal, create a task.
- The client is the assistant. It reads that list, then calls the tools when your question needs them.
You sign in once and approve what the assistant can access. After that you just talk to it. Ask for a summary of last month's quotes, and the assistant calls the right tools and replies.
How a CRM uses MCP
A CRM holds the facts about every customer, which makes it one of the most useful things to connect. Once connected, you can ask the assistant to brief you before a call, find accounts with no recent contact, or log a call afterwards. Because it can write as well as read, notes and tasks go straight into the record.
An example from product sales
A coatings rep is on the way to a distributor meeting. She opens Claude and types, "Brief me on this distributor: open quotes, last order, anything they said about lead times." Claude pulls the answer from the CRM. After the meeting she says, "Log this call and add a task to send the revised quote on Friday." Both land in the record.

How PromptLab handles it
You connect Claude or ChatGPT to PromptLab with the connector URL https://trypromptlab.com/mcp. Sign-in uses OAuth, so there are no API keys to create or store. The assistant can read and write on every plan, Basic included.

Frequently asked questions
Who created MCP?
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, introduced MCP in late 2024 and published it as an open standard, so any vendor can build on it. ChatGPT supports it too, along with many other tools.
Do I need to be technical to use MCP?
No. With PromptLab you paste a connector URL into Claude or ChatGPT and approve access when asked. After that you talk to the assistant in plain words.
Is MCP the same as an API?
Not quite. An API is built for developers to code against. MCP is built so an AI assistant can discover what a tool offers and use it when you ask.
Can the assistant change my data?
In PromptLab it can read and write, for example logging a call or creating a task. You approve the connection when you sign in.
